Necessary preconditions for best practice implementation

To run this project, two factors were essential:

• The mapping of the existing personal histories/stories in the region, which help to highlight the human potential and the cultural interaction.
• The mapping of existing tourist routes, which become educational resources to the citizenship, promote a reflection on values and principles related to responsible tourism and inspire new development models based on a responsible and ethical consumption, all of which followed the principle upon which this project operated: "we learn from we have".

Main challeges encountered during planning, implementation and monitoring

Since this was a project based in a participative methodology in the territory of the Alto Guadalquivir commonwealth, they had to face a conceptual problem: the idea of the Alto Guadalquivir commonwealth itself, which is a political construction that does not reflect the socio-economic flows of the region.
One of the main challenges was connecting politicians and technicians to the territory, which needed more efforts than planned. Particularly, it was very challenging for politicians to assimilate the practice of sustainable and responsible tourism, the alignment of tourism with the SD goals and the need of involving citizenship and other diverse entities (such as cultural, sports and entrepreneurial associations) in the tourism planning (beyond the traditional stakeholders who are involve: hotels & restaurants).

It was also important to avoid the short-termism and effective and conjunctural actions, as well as to bet on medium-term and continuous actions.

Preconditions for replication

To replicate this project, it is necessary to have a territory with the two premises occur:

1. Stories that teach on human values:
   They analyzed the involved territories to identify experiences that were already aligned with the SD goals. Some life histories emerged from these experiences and are used as stories about sustainable and responsible tourism as well as SG goals fulfilment.
   Those stories and their characters were the main awareness resource for the rest of the population since they are considered inspiring experiences. That’s why some actions were built around those stories: workshops, conferences, journeys, experience panels and sustainable markets. Those actions allowed the stakeholders of the stories to tell share their experiences.
2. Existing initiatives in responsible tourism that can be used as close examples of how that territory can be a sustainable destination and as tools to start/activate the debate of these topics between the citizenship of the region.
